Special Announcement!

Happy Earth Day!

Yesterday (22nd April) was Earth Day! Did you do anything to make Mother Earth a better place?

This week I would like to ask you for an act of green and take action so that our coming generations aren’t affected due to our non-action towards healing and refuelling Mother Earth.

From the actions of Billions of people connected on earthday.org, together we’ve reached 2,023,369,573 Acts of Green. That’s just over 2 Billion. Let’s reach towards the 3 Billion mark.

Here are a few things we can do for our Mother Earth –

Hope you’ll do an act of green and make yourself more aware of the climate change and support our planet needs in this time.

Now back to this week’s Saturday-Pentacle issue.

App I’m enjoying using –

Calm: Meditation to Relax, Focus & Sleep Better.

I’ve been using this app to help myself be more mindful. Earlier I’ve mentioned about Headspace app as well, however, this app is also my routine app along with Headspace. As I keep alternating between these two to break the monotony.

If you want to become more aware of yourself and be more mindful about your decisions in life, meditation is a great place to start and this app is a great stepping stone.

Just in case if I got you curious, you can go check out this app –

According to the National Green Tribunal (NGT), cutlery, bags, cups, and various forms of single-use plastic are now prohibited from use in the NCT. Great first step by NCT of Delhi!

App I’m enjoying using –

Nike+ Run Club app by Nike – Oh boy! This is the app which helped me start with running. Believe it or not, till date I am using it for training programs and run tracking.

This app has come a long long way. It has training programs to start you up with running or if you are a runner already and want to improve upon your performance, they have got your back for everything. Beginner, intermediate to Advance, they have all sort of training programs built right in this app. The best part? It’s the Nike+ running community. It’s amazing how you feel competitive with this community. You can post pictures of your run on your feed and like everyone else’s run posts and comment just like a social media platform. But unlike other social media communities, NRC community is an action devising community, they charge you up and inspire to run more.

In case you are just starting up, just start a beginner program with this app and go as it says, you’ll do your first 5Kms in a month. I’ve been there and have done that, so you can trust me on this one.

In case I got you curious about running, you can go check out this app –

Pss…. Here’s a post I wrote almost 2 years back – ‘Story of my first half marathon’ where I have provided more in-depth and on training information about this app. You may find it more helpful.

2.

Well, I can’t resist myself from sharing another article for this Pentacle issue, which is a bit geeky sounding and long form but hell yes, it’s an amazing article about our brain.

The empty brain

For more than half a century now, psychologists, linguists, neuroscientists and other experts on human behaviour have been asserting that the human brain works like a computer. But It doesn’t and this article is a great explanation. Go check it out.

What I’m reading/watching/listening to

A few days ago, suddenly I stumbled upon this TEDx talk on YouTube. To my humble surprise, it was a talk by Ms. Meena Barot, my run club buddy (from the Navi Mumbai Runners) and a consultant Faculty at ITM college, Kharghar (Navi Mumbai, India). It just gave me immense pleasure that she could tell her story on a TEDx talk and I could feel the emotion of her story. She is awe inspiring. Just see the video. Great to know her.

As she said in the end. “Maktub” …It is written.

Quote I’m pondering on lately – Today’s quote is also from Ms. Meena’s TEDx Talk, in fact a little extended version.

“To realize one’s destiny is a person’s only real obligation and when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.”

Product I’m enjoying using –

IFTTT (If this then that) – This week is also an online service instead of a physical product. I’ve been using it from past several years.

IFTTT – This is the best tool available if you want to automate your online presence. You can connect your social accounts and do posting automagically. For example – If you post on Facebook but then manually post the same thing on Twitter, so you can create an IFTTT applet which will automatically keep looking for your new Facebook posts and as soon as you make one it will automatically shorten it according to Twitter and post it there as well. You can connect zillion of apps and sites. Even you can light your wifi connected light bulbs as soon as you enter a nearby proximity to your home. Isn’t that amazing?

Light of the Church!

As I went inside the shrine the atmosphere around me changed, from the high light of the afternoon sun, it became an ambient dying yellow.

Body literally felt the transition from scorching heat to a soothing feel. Then with the whispering sounds of the prayers, my mind came to peace.

Article I’m enjoying (and pondering)

How To Have An Ex-Wife – A very interesting though a little personal article. Loved how he still has his best friend in her ex-wife. But the best part is his missing of her nightmares when she would want his embrace after waking up from one in the death of the night. Don’t read if you feel stigmatic by the word marriage, divorce or ex-wife.

What I’m reading/watching/listening to

I’ve been listening to this song on repeat over this past week – Ember by SkylightVision (a Pune, India based band).

I was introduced to this track by a close friend of mine. Even though the feel of this song is a little gloomy. But it kinda struck that chord.

Perfios – This is not a physical product but an online service, which I’ve been using from past 4 years to manage my personal finances. You can connect it to your accounts (bank account, credit cards, loan accounts etc) and it will show you all your assets and liabilities on a polished dashboard plus there is a lot more. If you are wondering about the security, they have bank level security and encryptions. Try it out, I’m sure you’ll love it.

Product I’m enjoying using –

RRUNN handheld bottle by Unived

RRUNN Handheld | Photograph by Himanshu Sachdeva

I got this amazing product in January 2017 as a contest win prize right after SCMM 2017. I wanted to use it immediately, but due to work commitment and travelling, my running routine took a back seat for many weeks. But last Sunday I got to test this handheld bottle on my Parsik Hill run. I’m just loving this bottle because to its sports friendliness. Few features which a runner would want –

  • Light weight design
  • Firm grip – Makes it really comfortable and utilitarian while running
  • BPA Free – Meaning it doesn’t contain any cancer causing chemical which is usually found in plastic bottles
  • Suck Lock – This bottle has a suck lock seal, meaning you have to suck the top of it to sip the water. As soon as you release the suck there is a rubber seal which locks the bottle from inside, that way water doesn’t come out, even if you put the bottle upside down. Cool concept and really handy if you are a sports person.

Kudos to Unived again for this amazing product. If you are an athlete or a sports person then I think you will love this bottle. At the price point of Rs. 250/- (just under $4) it’s a steal. Click the picture above if you want to buy one. (I don’t have any affiliation with Unived however this is just some love pouring in for a good product)

Commercialism in Music Is Totally Justified

A great article putting some like on commercialism in Music while putting some light on the career of Justin Timberlake. I loved the line from this article –

The artistic merit of work that experiences commercial success is not diminished by its profitability.

What I’m reading/watching/listening to — This past week the below video made me think how social media can be brought to good use by influencers. When few YouTube stars teamed up with a Hollywood star, Ben Stiller to raise a million dollars for a famine which is currently happening in Somalia. They did it successfully. Their fundraising story is amazing along with the fact how Jerome got to know about the situation in Somalia, just watch the video.

Time 2016 Person of the year – You Picture – Time.com

I stumbled upon this time article, through which I got to know that Time magazine’s ‘Person of the Year’ 2006 was … Me!

I’m not kidding. Indeed it was us the common people.

It was dedicated to all the common people who had influenced the news all through that year! This sounds pretty quirky but it’s sort of genius.

Moment of eureka!

What I’m reading/watching/listening to — Black Mirror

I’m in awe of this series. I’m binge watching this on Netflix. It’s a compilation of films based on future, including technology, humans and their collision somewhere in between. First episode of the season 3 (Nosedive) made me horrified about the future of social media. Must watch series if you follow my taste.

The White Helmets

I found this 40 minutes long documentary in my Netflix suggestions and I’m glad i found it. This is a documentary on The Syrian Civil Defense Force, also known as the White Helmets. This organisation is working in the war facing country Syria and are the first people to help/respond post an air strike or a land attack. They have saved more thousands of war victims, seen so many death but saved so many people. They are the true living heroes of this world we are living in. Even thought this film shook me to my core when I saw how Khaled (One of The White Helmets who died on 11th Aug 2016 during an air strike) saved a 10-day-old baby from the rubble of a collapsed building in 2014. The moment became known as the “miracle baby” rescue after the scene was caught on camera and went viral.

If you just have just 1 min, watch this video. You’ll get the hint of what I’m talking about.

This is an amazing Tie clip collar microphone. As I’m leaning more into recording pro audio, this mic is becoming my go to mic. The build quality of this mic is really sturdy and wire length is also really good. Plus this mic can directly go to my Nikon DSLR and provide a great clean Mono audio. I’ve linked the amazon link here, just click the picture to the left, if you’re interested in buying one.

My most popular Instagram post recently — Baycity Lights!

I love how beautiful the nights are in Bombay. Even the traffic looks beautiful with some Bokeh.

Article I’m enjoying (and pondering) — I recently stumbled upon FEE.org via Mike Rowe’s podcast – The way I heard it with Mike Rowe and since then I’m really enjoying the long form articles from FEE.org. This is the latest one I read and found it really interesting.

The Benefits and Perils of Being Self-Employed

If you are starting up in your entrepreneurial efforts or thinking about it, this article is a must read.

What I’m reading/watching/listening to

Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey

This is a fascinating documentary series that explores how we discovered the laws of nature and found our coordinates in space and time. Host of this docu-series is Neil deGrasse Tyson (Ph.D.), I am loving is curious but awkward presentation of the Cosmos.

A Quote I’m pondering on lately – Today’s quote is also inspired from above docu-series and Neil deGrasse Tyson.

“The good thing about science is that it’s true whether or not you believe in it.”

― Neil deGrasse Tyson

Until Next Saturday!

Thanks for reading.

Quick endnote – as a few of you guys have told me that emails are not delivering in the Gmail primary inbox and going to promotions tab in your Gmail. I suggest below two pro tips to get my email in your Primary inbox from next time.

Saturday-Pentacle – Week 7 – 2017

Greetings my internet friends,

Here are some popular links, thoughts, and articles for today’s “Saturday-Pentacle” e-mail newsletter. This is a free newsletter and goes out every Saturday only for my subscribed readers.

Enjoy!

Post of the week – Well! This one is a poem written by me about 4 years ago.

Rosetta stone!

This poem re-emphasizes my belief that sometimes you don’t write a poem (or any work of art, for that matter), it gets written through you.

My most popular Instagram post recentlyMargarita

A good Margarita is a result of mixing in the well-diversified spirits and shaking it for quite a long time in a small Cask. Same is life; when you want something great, you put all the right ingredients, put all the hard work. You’ll get the Margarita you would want.

Article I’m enjoying (and pondering) — An interesting perspective on College by Tyler Curtis

Is College Even Worth It? There’s Every Reason for Doubt

For a non-engineering but more critical student, the answer is abundantly clear: It’s a big ‘No’. What they need to know can be taught more effectively at a lower cost by some other means. Good article.

What I’m reading/watching/listening toTony Robbins: I’m not your Guru

This is an overwhelming documentary on Tony Robbins. Just see how he accumulates his energy before delivering a powerful blasting, on stage entry, it might blow your mind. How he understands and feels the psychology of a fellow human is unbelievable. This documentary is definitely worth a watch if you are looking for even a slight bit of motivation.

Casablanca Movie Review from my last post-

If you want to see emotions depicted perfectly by a man, see Humphrey Bogart’s performance in this Movie. Just flawless. If you want to see the beauty in pure simplicity, watch Ingrid Bergman in this movie. She’s a delight to watch. This movie, in the end, might feel like a lot of emotions, a little hint of post-war life and a graceful sacrifice for love and of love. I would give this movie a 9.5 out of a 10. I cut .5 to not glorifying the killing shot in climax.

A Quote I’m pondering on lately – This is a quote I wrote, inspired by a picture of a girl with freckles.

“There is a beauty in the dark spots as well, just you need to sprinkle a hint of light.”

Until Next Saturday!

Thanks for reading.
