Saturday-Pentacle - Week 21 - 2017

Post of the week –

Looking back (An annual review – 2017) – This is the time of the year again, a yearly life review of my last year. Last year I did it almost in the second quarter. This year I’m a bit early even though still late.

So here it is, as usual consisting of three questions – 1) What went well? 2) What didn’t go so well? 3) What am I working towards?

This is an intentional public post to keep myself accountable for the targets I set for the year 2018. If it inspires you, you can use this template and write your own life review. I’m sure it will impact your life in a positive way.

Article I’ve been pondering upon —

Why I decided to shave my head – Well, isn’t the title a little surprising? More so, if you are an Indian girl doing it without any religious intent or due to a disease.

This article from one of my recent acquaintances and who also happens to be a blogger/journalist – Priyamvada Mangal, was surprisingly liberating. She tells her story of how she broke the taboo not just for the sake of breaking it but to liberate herself and then went on this solo journey to McLeod Ganj. A Good Read.

What am I watching — (SPOILER ALERT)

The Big Sick – I saw this movie this weekend, which is based on a real-life romance of the Karachi born American comedian Kumail Nanjiani and (his now wife) Emily Gordon. Film’s romantic plot between a Muslim guy and a white American girl leads to Emily getting almost terminally I’ll but then coming back (ok that was the spoiler).

Here is the official Trailer for the movie. It’s available on Amazon Prime (just in case you have Prime membership).

Quote I’m pondering on lately –

“Do what you feel in your heart to be right – for you’ll be criticized anyway. You’ll be damned if you do, and damned if you don’t.”

— Eleanor Roosevelt

Looking back an annual Review – 2016

Finally, I could finish up my long overdue Annual Review post for last year – 2016. Coincidentally last year also I posted it in the middle of the year and this year too.

But interestingly that delay gave me the leverage of putting a few learnings from past year into the new year 2017’s resolution list and work on them till this Annual Review was published (meaning now).

I would encourage you to check out my post for interesting insights, patterns and stats. Click here or just click on the picture above to access the article.

Looking through the window of a moving train!

It was a long day. Glad we made out alive at least for today from this black hole of a place filled with white collared labourers.

We were walking through the subway tunnel, our hands sometimes brushing each other’s.  It was a strangely good feeling. We were on the platform, awkwardly waiting for the train. Praying in our minds that train never comes. Her eyes were shyingly looking at mine. But never really making the contact.I was pretending to be looking

I was pretending to be looking inside my phone like my universe resides in there.  But I was never actually looking inside my phone but always pretending for not having the courage to look into her eyes. Then the moment of my life came. I looked up, to look right into her eyes.

Then the moment of my life came. I looked up, to look right into her eyes. Those brown coloured eyes, always shy. But they had this odd light. In that light, I saw myself. Loved.

It was a moment’s contact between her eyes and mine, why did it feel like ages. Why didn’t her talks said what I could see in the depth of her eyes? I was still trying to figure out when we heard the horn of the approaching train. It was my train. And then we heard the horn of the second train going the other way. This was her train.

I took her hand and squeezed it gently in affection. She just stood looking at my face as I entered my train. I waved her good bye and signalled to catch her train before it leaves. She smiled shyingly as usual and turned around to get into her train and she did.

Both our trains honked once again at the same time almost in sync like both our lives were now, in sync with each other.

My train was empty, I took the right side window seat and looked outside. She was standing in the gate of that train boggy. Our trains started moving.

I was looking at her through the window of the moving train. As our trains crossed, I saw her smiling at me.

I smiled back at her.

And I know now!

I know now.

Article(s) I’m enjoying (and pondering)

Entropy: Why Life Always Seems to Get More Complicated – This is an article for which you should free yourself from other trivial things, go to a coffee shop order a Latte and nibble on this article. It’s about life and how we get it to be more complicated.

You’ll find a gem or two in this one. A good one from one of my favourite authors – James Clear.

What I’m reading/watching/listening to

Well! This is the best piece of content I stumbled upon this week. It’s a video of Steve Jobs 2005 Stanford Commencement Speech. He told 3 Stories and not a single one of them left me without giving goosebumps.

It’s a must not miss video. Please watch and get some inspiration.

Quote I’m pondering on lately –

Saturday Pentacle Weekly Newsletter - Banner
By Himanshu Sachdeva

Hello!

Welcome to another edition of Saturday Pentacle.

Last week was a reflection week for me. I conducted a half-yearly review of my yearly goals. As it is important to work hard on things you care about, it is more important to reflect on your progress in short and medium periods. For me, these periods are weekly, monthly and 6 monthly. It made me rethink about course correction and realigning my energies towards things that actually matter.

Otherwise, it was a productive week for me on the work side, on the creative side it was more of consume week than create. Next week is going to be a create week more than consume.

Coming to the book reading/listening progress, I listened to the Sherlock Holmes some more this past week and finished the Atomic Habits –

  1. The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes – 75% done (Audible)
  2. Atomic Habits by James Clear – 100% done (Audible) – This audiobook is like a page-turner version for audio (I don’t know if there is a specific word for it for audiobooks, let me know in comments if there is).

That’s it for the personal updates.

Without further adieu, please enjoy this week’s Saturday-Pentacle.

An new material I’m exited about

Pentadiamond – A new addition to the carbon family, Pentadiamond, is predicted to be light like graphite, hard like diamond and semiconducting like silicon.

I can’t even imagine, how many use cases are there for this kind of material. I’m excited to think about – how it might be used (i hope not as a weapon).

Here is the original research publication link.

A poem I loved —

I would like you to be still! read by Eva Green – I recently discovered the Eva Green has an Instagram page and man! isn’t it filled up weird but fresh stuff, I hadn’t been exposed to before.

This is Pablo Neruda’s poem “I would like you to be still!” in Eva’s brilliant voice –

The poem and the narration both are wonderful.

A show I loved

Homecoming – I was excited to watch the Season 2 after an amazing Season 1 with Julia Roberts as the protagonist. Homecoming series is about how a private company authorized by military runs a program to make the PTSD veterans forget their past. But it becomes much more than that eventually. It’s a great drama and the way it is shot, kudos to the DOP.

I loved the season two as well, even though the protagonist is different in this but she’s a refreshing change.

You can check it out on Amazon PrimeVideo – Season 1 | Season 2

A Podcast episode I re-listened —

How to Become a Psychedelic Therapist – This episode of the Tim Ferriss show was amazing. Marcela’s story, the conversation about the psychedelic therapy and MAPS were out of the world.

A must listen. This was the second time I listened to it this week.

Quote which I found meaningful –

Once we let go of every thing, everything remains.

In this episode, we talk about his story. How he got into defence services despite all the financial and other difficulties.
