A Person I’m fascinated with —

Matt D’Avella – He is a filmmaker and a podcaster. Basically created the life what I dream of. He put out not just quality content visually but the depth of the stories and topics is just awe inspiring.

Go check him out – Instagram | YouTube

A song I’m loving —

The Ride by Amanda Palmer – I got introduced to Amanda through The Tim Ferriss Show podcast. She just blew my mind with that episode. She is a renowned singer and wife of one of my favourite writers Neil Gaiman. A little later, I discovered her new album – There will be no intermissions. To be honest this album is a little sad and can make someone cry. But at the same time so powerful that it can actually take you for a ride (into another world).

Quote I’m pondering on lately –

Looking back (An annual review – 2018)

[rt_reading_time label=”Reading Time:” postfix=”minutes” postfix_singular=”minute”]

From the past five years, I’m doing an annual review of my life. It’s the time when every year I take a pause and reflect back on my successes and failures in the past year. I publish it here in this Blog which keeps me publicly accountable for the goals for the coming year. Here is it for this year –

Photo by Michael Skok on Unsplash

This is my sixth annual review, you can access my previous reviews for 2017, 2016, 2015 (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3), 2014 and 2013. This year also I’ll answer three questions, the same as the past 5 years:

  1. What went well this year?
  2. What didn’t go so well this year?
  3. What’s am I working toward?

Hope it will be insightful and interesting for some of you. Lets cut to the chase.

Tribe of Mentors: Short Life Advice from the Best in the World

I’m really excited for this book which will be releasing in Dec Month of 2017, because it’s written by none other than my favourite person – Tim Ferriss.

This book is basically a concentrated written version of his podcast (The Tim Ferriss Show) format interviews with the top players of any skill. Billionaires, Athletes,  Artists or Army, you name it.

As I’m yet to read it myself, but I’ve heard about it that every interview has around 11 questions and their answers. Really excited to read it in the Christmas month.

If you are a frequent traveller, this article is for you. It has all the gadgets, backpack and clothing related details.

Bonus thing about following people, who are growth hackers, is the tips and tricks you get to learn which otherwise you won’t.

A good read, hope you’ll find it useful too.

  1. A Semi Truck – Amazing security features, faster than diesel trucks and autopilot facility integrated.
  2. A Roadster Car – 0-100 kmph (0-60 mph) in 1.9 seconds. I think that says it all. Period.

Here is a quick overview video of that event, watch it and get your mind blown away –

Product of the week –

Backblaze

After an accident with my laptop in past year, I was looking for a backup service which is professional quality and can continuously backup my data to a secure cloud instead of a physical drive. Why?

Two important factors –

  1. Scalability – If you buy a physical backup hard drive, it has a limit and post that you need to buy a new physical hard drive.
  2. Maintenance – If you buy a physical backup hard drive, you have to take care of it pretty much all the time and if you are travelling, it’s more pain in the neck.

With Backblaze’s professional level backup service you can forget to worry about the above two points. Now comes the price point which sold me in. It’s 5$ (320-350 Indian Rupees) per month and there is no limit to your data backup size. But the pricing is per computer. For example – If you have 1 windows pc it will be charged 5$ a month for unlimited data backup storage. However, if you also have a Mac, it will be charged a separate 5$ a month fee for unlimited data backup for this separate machine.

Just in case if I got you curious, you can go check out by clicking here or the Backblaze logo above.

Why I Can’t Post On Time – This is funny that I can totally relate to this post, even though I’m not a perfectionist. But when I try to publish quality content I tend to lean towards perfection. Which eventually leads to your work/post never getting published.

Tim Urban’s writing on his ‘Wait But Why’ Blog always fascinates me. He is a perfectionist and in this post, he confesses his perfection and why his posts don’t come on time. Even if you are not a blogger but a creator or a normal human, still there are gems in this post to learn from.

It takes courage to talk about your vulnerabilities, but Tim totally kills with this piece. A Good read.

App of the week –

Doodle: Easy Scheduling

As days pass, we are always caught in the illusion of being busy. But the reality is not being able to manage our time effectively.

Usually, when we are doing a full-time job or building a business, we have to get through multiple meetings every day. When you have a team of multiple people working together on something or probably multiple clients. It sometimes gets overwhelming to schedule a meeting where everybody’s time fits in properly.

I had heard about the Doodle app from the Tim Ferriss4 Hour work week book. However, I recently discovered that they have a mobile app as well now. Both for iOS and Android. Which makes it super easy now to schedule a meeting.

What you need to do is just open this app and create an event with multiple times slots showing your availability and then that’s it. A URL is created having meeting details and your open time slots. Forward this URL to People and they can just book any time slot available as per their schedule which matches everyone’s open time slots.

Otherwise, this kind of scheduling might involve calling all the invitees individually and asking for their time slots and then putting a meeting invite. Doodle solves that problem with 3-4 taps on this app.

Just in case if I got you curious, you can go check out this app –

App I’m enjoying using –

Awareness – Subtle awareness of time spent on the computer

As I adore minimalism, this desktop app is one of my favorites to make myself be aware of my computer usage. The best part is the sound of Tibetan singing bowl every hour which doesn’t stop you from doing what you are doing but makes you aware.

It senses when you take a five-minute break and then resets the one hour clock. When you start using your computer back, it starts the alarm clock. It also displays how long you’ve been using your computer without a break in windows taskbar area (in the app tooltip), which is pretty handy.

Just in case if I got you curious, you can go check out this app here (It’s free for Windows and $1.99 in the Mac App Store) or click the Tibetan singing bowl icon above to download.

Emotions are the key to courage and alive!

We start feeling emotions from the very first day we get into our consciousness. We laugh with our friends to share our joyous moments. We cry when someone breaks our heart. We feel low when someone goes away. We feel high when we are with the right ones at the right time. These feelings are emotions. But what it is exactly? Is it human nature? Is it a way of interaction without having to say a word? Is it a deep connection of two souls which lights up the spiritual recesses? Maybe it’s all of them. But specifically, it’s the outcome of mutual state of minds. When two souls or minds co-relate, then emotions emerge.

Emotions are present in each and every one. Different persons picture it in their own way. Some say “It’s weak to be emotional. Emotions can distract you from the decisions you want to take for good.” I won’t deny it, but it’s not entirely true. A great mind had said, nothing is false, everything we see, we hear, we feel is truth. Cause everyone and everything has their own angle to the truth. In some situations, it seems to be true but in other situations, it may seem false. Here, another angle to the truth is that emotions are a very powerful feeling.

I’ve seen people going extreme in emotions, both in a good way and a bad way. But if you can channel this feeling in the right way, you can do great things to your life. If you love what you do, then you unknowingly put your emotions in that thing and this is what gives you courage in those moments of the reverse wind. When things aren’t falling in the right place, this is what keeps you going. Emotions are in there in your subconscious all the time. They keep you motivated.

Being emotional is a good thing and a bad thing. Let’s talk about the good thing first. Good thing is that it is the key to your courage in those low moments of life and it’s a key to being human. When we are emotional we do things with extremity. Like I said earlier if this extremity is channelized in positivity, the outcome will be great and positive for your life. The bad thing is sometimes being emotional can distract you from making the right decisions and emotions are channelized in negativity, which can make life really miserable.

From the experience I’ve had is, people who are emotional are mostly good at heart. But we should keep in mind that being emotional and being psychotic are way different things. While being emotional we shouldn’t forget the practicality of the situation. Emotion is human nature and Psychosis is a disorder. Emotional people are people who still can see the real picture and can adapt to the situation while being in that feeling.

Having some emotions towards our family and friends and the work we do, greatly enhance our relations, boost up our creativity, makes us alive. What is alive? Alive is a state of mind. A person can be breathing but still not alive, yes that’s possible. Until and unless he has emotions and feelings, he is way too far from being alive. Life isn’t about just being biologically and physically alive, but emotionally and mentally alive. Emotions are good but discipline is a great ingredient in the recipe of life. Life we really want is a mix of little emotions, great discipline and self-compassion.

Having said all of that, there should be a practical philosophy which everyone should follow. This can make you a better human being while being an emotional person. Our own values are very valuable. We should always let our values drive our decisions.

Recently I was watching an interview of Tim Ferriss on Mastering Any Skill. Tim had given great advice. I’ll cite him as stated – “The way I look at philosophy is, ideally it’s an operating system for life, for making a decision about what you should do and what you should not do.”.   So the whole point here is we should leverage ourselves to be emotional cause it makes us alive, but at the same time we shouldn’t let our values fade away, we should follow a practical philosophy, which will eventually make our lives better and us alive.
